A Letter to My Late Grandmother

Juice WRLD’s mother, Carmela Wallace, letter to her son on what would have marked his 23rd birthday. And I was so inspired.

“I know that I would have told you how proud I was of the man you became and your commitment to changing lives. I miss celebrating your birthday and all the good times that we shared. I have so many wonderful memories of you that will live in my heart forever.” —Carmela Wallace

Unconditional love ensures that we never lose touch with those we love. Even when that person leaves this life to — what I believe — begin a new, we will always feel them with us loving us, until we meet them again.

Juice WRLD’s mother, Carmela Wallace, has shared a moving letter to her son on what would have marked his 23rd birthday. I read her words and cried walked away, came back, read some more, and cried.

Now, I could not tell you one song by Juice WRLD. I couldn’t repeat one rhyme, but his mother’s words correlated with words I’ve heard from my mother and my Grandmother Martha.

The Letter inspired me to write one of my own to my Grandmother Martha. My grandmother ascended when I was 17 years, a week before I graduated from high school.

Since her ascension, every year around the Christmas holidays, I’d have a dream about my Grandmother Martha.

However, five years ago, my dream was slightly different.

On this night, I felt her touch my feet as she would always do. And as usual, I felt as if I were asleep and awake at the same time. Suddenly, the room smelled like gardenias. Every time. Gardenias (my grandmother's maiden name is Gardner and one of her favorite perfumes smelled like gardenias).
