A Writing Habit
Do I Really Feel Like Writing Today?
On the days when writing is hard, I'm not motivated, and I'm not inspired… What do I do?
What do you do when the page is empty? What do you write on the days when writing comes hard? What do you do when you've been thrown off balance by some bad news or your confidence is bruised? Perhaps some would say, "then don't write."
I say, "Write anyway."
Perhaps it won't be the first six pages of the next great American novel or an insightful Pulitzer-winning article carefully crafted to dazzle the world. What if it's not poetry suffused with mind-blowing metaphors?
It may be one sentence — one meaningful sentence.
But you wrote it.
Nearly 17 years ago, I decided to write daily. It was after Hurricane Katrina. I was angry, embarrassed, hurt, and confused. I was angry to have lost nearly all my worldly possessions. And before anyone says, "those things don't matter," I genuinely hope you never experience it so you can continue to live in that view of life.
