Fear and What Lies Beneath Can Ruin Your Path to Success
Deep seeded fears may be sabotaging your success. (Updated)
One late night, when I was younger. I watched a movie my Mom forbade me to watch. The movie's name was Amityville, a movie based on actual events. I wanted to watch the movie for that reason alone.
Well, as it happens that particular weekend all three parts of the trilogy were playing. My cousin babysat my brothers, sister, and me. He let me stay up longer since I was the oldest. Well, I watched all three parts.
And I lived in complete fear for nearly two weeks. I was afraid to sleep with the lights off. I hated sleeping in my room alone. I was paranoid, and finally, I had to tell my Mom why.
She told me, "Okay, we are going to watch a lot of happy movies, and you'll have to be brave enough each night and sleep in your room until that fear goes away. Use your night light for a while."
We watched a lot of happy movies to wash away the bad ones. I turned on my night light every night. Soon, the fear disappeared, and I didn't need the night light anymore.
In its most favorable light, fear is a protective instinct that keeps us from harm. However, we are no longer in the wild running from lions as we forage for food — though Monday morning traffic can feel like it.
