I saw this with a friend's dad who was an alcoholic. He became the "happy drunk." Most times when you saw him he was slurring his words and stumbling. It got to the place where even when he hadn't been drinking he took on the "drunk" personality. But later after an attempt at taking his own life, everyone discovered it was a "character." He was really sad and needed help.
