I think exhaustion affects different people well, differently. Sometimes people are in denial for years when they lose someone to addiction. My mom's friend seemed relieved when her son passed, but then years later (years!) her grief set in when his son grew up and completed high school. She was hurt that her son wouldn't get to see him grow up.
