It does feel like we have been wasting our time and energy on relationships that may last 3 or 4 years and then bam...heartbreak. Then we have to start over again then once more after 3 or 4 years bam! Again.

Hmm? I think you have a good point here. We have been taught to date for a long-term commitment or marriage--specifically in the Black and African Diaspora.

I can't speak for other cultures. I know a few of my white friends have told me that they date for fun, getting to know someone new, companionship to different events, and for marriage. They have also told me, this is something they let the person know up front..."I'm not looking for anything serious, just casual."
