It feels strange to clap, but I clap for your bravery and transparency. I don't know any woman that has not gone through this. I had uncles on both my stepfathers side of the family say some inappropriate stuff. It went over my head until I got older and thought about it.
Stuff like, "you're gonna make a man real happy one day."
"If you weren't Jailbait...I'd give these boys a run for their money."
I didn't know what they were talking about. I was so aloof at 15.
They never touched me because they feared the closeness I had to my Mom.
But she did slap the taste out of one of my step uncles mouth when she found out what he said to me.
Being assaulted and violated changes how we see the world as women. We don't feel safe anymore after being violated. You never quite see the world the same again.
And how terrible when the violater is family. Someone you should be able to trust.
You are right, we have to let children know they can come to us if someone is saying anything or doing anything to make them feel unsafe.
