I've found some people take their claps very seriously. They do have a grading scale with it.

This one writer, a few months old on Medium, opined that they tend to gauge an article on its quality — the content, the structuring, the grammar, the style, the development of ideas, and so on. They were fine with getting one clap as well for their article.
