I’ve since learned how to separate the two — colleagues and friends. When we talk about work-life balance. I think this should be a part of the conversation. When we have jobs where we work around people for 10+ hours a day (or even the regular 8-hour day), that’s a lot of time.
However, it may not and possibly should not extend itself beyond the workplace. In that rare instance when it does, we have to be clear about whether it is a real friendship or two folks who get along well at work.
Moreover, when things get personal, some people just may not jive with different types of personalities.
