My step brother came out in college amongst his friends first. He later came out to the family years later because he was older and didn't want to hide anymore. I really think the reason he felt safe to come out to the family (particularly my stepdad) is because my stepdad had become much more light hearted after his mother and sister past away. He was his only biological child so my step brother was scared.

My stepfather understood. He's always afraid for his safety. He didn't like some of the guys my step brother dated. But like I told him, my stepdad didn't like anyone I dated until recently. He doesn't like anyone my sister dates either. He didn't like my youngest brother's first wife.
