Oh, no. My grandmother wouldn't allow cards in her house at all. Not even old maid. She was from the tradition that saw playing cards as Divination tools used by the fortune tellers. She was very old school about that. Hoodoo and Voodoo was frowned upon in the bible belt (although it is all over the south) and playing cards were seen as one of the tools for that. There's a whole belief about being mislead by the trickster (the joker in the deck).
When I became a teenager my Mom allowed it. She wasn't as traditional. I love to play Gin Rummy and Spades. I loved to sneak and play Go-Fish as a kid.
