The Wisdom of Dissonance
In this poem and prose mini-collection, discover how the voice of experience finds its tune even in the most dissonant moments.
You don’t have to chase the sun, it will find you. — Janet Autherine
Pitchy
The pitch shifts
like sand beneath my feet
’cause the notes
I thought I knew
suddenly sound
out of tune
with a melody off-key
as my voice cracks
on the high notes
but the lows rumble uncertain
in a harmony
I thought I held.
Aural Pacing
Aural pacing
my heart is racing
to get back
on track
before I lose
my grip on things
the steady beat
of what once was
I long for it again like
a metronome in my chest
tick, tick, tick, a tick
but the notes are jumbled
the tempo twists and tangles
disjointed melodies
threaten to trip me up
each step I stumble
each breath I’m humble
still, I beg
for something familiar
dissonance threatens harmonies
yet in the chaos
a new rhythm might be born.
