You know, Sieran this happens to many writers. Some start out trying to write like Stephen King. But I learned something important from the Guitarist, Santana. In the beginning (which is your first 7 years of writing consistently — yes that’s still the beginning) you will imitate, you will steal certain nuances (never plagiarize — Check out the book “Steal Like An Artist” by Austin Kleon), and you will emulate other writers. It’s how we learn.

But in that process, never compare yourself to anyone. You can ask yourself questions like “What that literary devices are there in this piece?” or “What is it about this piece I enjoy so much and how can I bring this into my writing?”

After practicing with the intention of learning, not copying, your voice will come forward, more polished, renewed, skilled, and articulate. You have a voice, it’s just that your instincts and intuition are telling you to fine-tune that voice for the next level in your writing career.

Yes, I’ve been there.
